Tell me where the light is...
I am in the process of paying back money to various sources, both individual and corporations. You'd think this would be a bad time to buy some new music. It is. But when have I let a bad idea stop me?
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs recently recorded a four-song acoustic set for an exclusive iTunes download. I think it might be the best $3.96 I've ever spent. I've always liked Karen O's voice, but these songs blow away anything she's ever done before. And Nick Zinner just made my list of favourite guitarists (to be posted when I think of other people to be on it).
The Yeah Yeah Yeah's music has this frantic energy about it; a frenzied call to arms laced with fierce sexual energy. You listen to it and get the distinct feeling that they're making you their bitch. But these acoustic rederings add some incredibly dramatic tension to the music. Karen O weeps into the mike, and some subtle reverb conjures images of a fractured girl alone in a room. It's heartbreaking in a way that the electrified versions covered with feverish lust. These songs are water tight.
I encourage everyone to spend the four dollars! It's a small price to pay and you will NOT regret it.
