More Modern Godesses of Music

Today we (I) do another salute to the amazing women of music. This will be the fourth edition of the list honouring girls who sing, play guitar, piano, harp, keyboards, or just generally rock out. Enjoy!

Original List (October 2005)

# Sharin Foo of the Raveonettes
# Bjork
# Tori Amos
# Regine Chassange of Arcade Fire
# Amy Millan of Stars/Broken Social Scene
# Meg White of the White Stripes
# Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs
# Fiona Apple
# Tegan
# Sara
# Zia McCabe of the Dandy Warhols
# Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth
# D'Arcy Wretsky of Smashing Pumpkins

# Chan Marshall (Cat Power)
# Jenny Lewis
# Joanna Newsom
# Victoria Bergsman
# Gwen-O, RiotBecki & Rosay of The Pipettes

Even More Amendments (November 2008)

# Marnie Stern

If anyone ever says girls can't play guitar, all you need do is play them any track off of Marnie Stern's latest album, This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That, and they will apologize.

# Mirah

Cute little voice, after 9pm lyrics. Ooo la la... She's been described as Liz Phair, but not as cynical. Plus, her cover of "Dancing in the Dark" is hilarious.

# Olga Bell

Olga Bell would be on this list if only for her stellar (and incredibly competent) cover of "Videotape/The Eraser," but her debut EP of original material is striking, energetic, and constantly surprising.

# Brooke Waggoner

Brooke Waggoner GAVE AWAY her debut EP "Fresh Pair of Eyes," and I still feel guilty I didn't pay for it. If her music is any indication of her personality, I want to hang out with her. I love how every song has a really positive vibe to it, and will occasionally break into an "I can't keep it in anymore" sort of revelry.

That's it for right now. I'm trying to be practical this year, not bestowing a "goddess" ranking on anyone I have a mild infatuation for, or who has one song I get hung up on and am unable to name another song from their catalog. Fabulous women who may yet make the list from this year are:

  • Laura Veirs
  • Olivia B. Merilahti of The Do
  • Romi and Sari Lightman of Ghost Bees
  • Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes

  • Our Hell - Emily Haines (from Knives Don't Have Your Back)

Liz, Angelo, Anyone else? What you got?

    Before she was Sarah Palin...

Liz: What made you think I was gay?
    Jack: Your shoes.
    Liz: Well, I'm not gay.
Jack: Those shoes are definitely bi-curious.

Liz: I'm sorry, you're saying you want us to use the show to sell stuff?
Jack: Look, I know how this sounds.
Liz: No, Jack. We're not doing that. We're not compromising the integrity of the show to sell-
Pete: Wow, this is Diet Snapple?
Liz: I know! It tastes just like regular Snapple, doesn't it?
Frank: You should try "Plumigranite." It's amazing.
Cerie: (to camera) I only date guys who drink Snapple.
Jack: Look, we all love Snapple. Lord knows I do, but focus here. We're talking about product integration.

    Oh You (AC)!

I have begun the process for applying to Teacher College in an official capacity now (ie/ I started paying fees). Two things are starting to worry me about this whole set-up. They are as follows:

    1) They contact successful candidates on April Fool's Day.
    2) The Ontario Faculties of Education incomprehensibly abbreviates to TEAS ("tease").

This is like applying to seminary and finding out if I got in on a festival of religious doubt (though I don't know if there are any of those currently going on).

All joking aside, having paid my $183.00 CDN makes this a pretty official "career move," something I have not made before. Cool.

    Placeholder.

    Man, it's been a while.

I keep thinking of junk I can write and put on here, but then I see something shiny and... well...

I have things I could write about, but by now there's so much clunking around up there that I'm sure I'll leave something out or have some stuff come up half-baked. So here are two statements and a question:

S1) People who interrupt are THE WORST when your job is to be polite.
S2) It sucks when your foot just starts to hurt for no reason and won't quit.

Q1) How do you know if you have diabetes?

Oh yeah, and it's American election night. I'm intentionally not following it. I'll just see what happens tomorrow morning.
